    Red

The end tag is not red but [/color]

Also, when the bbcode tags are not nested correctly, they stop working and output as text.

Is that a picture of your son?

Yeah, about 10 years ago! 🙂 He just turned 13 last April. Is that a picture of YOU? What kind of bike?

Lists don’t work here in bbcode because WordPress rejects it as the code is no longer kosher HTML.

A proper list must now have a closing tag for each listed item, and bbcode only has an opening tag.

However, you can build lists from the toolbar and it gives the correct HTML5 code.

I noticed that old lists in old posts causes subsequent posts to look strange because the listed items are not closed and still have influence far beyond the listed item as a result.

Wordpress only allows correct HTML and rejects deprecated tags. This is a good thing. It also helps a site in google ranking when the code is all kosher.

    🙂

Using the toolbar it took a few seconds to achieve a list.

    Code:

    <ul>
    <li>apples</li>

    <li>oranges</li>

    <li>pears</li>

    <li>bananas</li>

    <li>kiwifruit</li>
    </ul>

    Renders as:

    • apples
    • oranges
    • pears
    • bananas
    • kiwifruit

I just typed out the list, then selected the whole lot and clicked ul then selected each item one at a time and clicked li

There are a number of options available as to how the forum works and they can address these issues quite easily. The way it is now is intentional as it was how the old forum was. Oldest post first latest post last. This is a natural way to follow the conversation.

However, most forums have the latest post first so that people can visit the thread and see the latest. This is really easy for me to do, SHALL I GIVE IT A GO?

As for replying to an old post, the forum supports replies directly under the post that you replied from. I can nest the forum 2 levels deep up to 5 levels deep. If I was going to turn this on, I would prefer 2 levels deep as 5 levels can be a bit confusing I think, (a reply or a reply x 5).

SHALL I ALLOW REPLIES 2 LEVELS DEEP? This is easy for me to enable and disable.

I have no idea what you’re talking about! 🙂

Okay, see if you can follow this………

Yesterday, I posted on the “I Was Baptized Into The Trinity” thread. I made my post at 5:07, July 13. Now, you obviously have the newer posts going on top in that thread, right? Because I saw a new post by Lightenup today, and her post is on top of mine, right? But here’s my concern: David replied to my post from yesterday, and it is in a “Reply Box” (or whatever) under my post, right? So I replied back to him today…….. AFTER KATHI MADE HER POST ………. and my reply is not on top of the page. Instead, you have to scroll through however many new posts to get to the older posts – just so you can see if someone replied to that older post. And if they did, and you reply back to them, your BRAND NEW response remains hidden in a “Reply Box”, somewhere way BELOW that newest post by Kathi – or whoever.

So let’s say that I make a post on Monday. And then 20 different people make 20 different posts on Tuesday. And then you respond to my Monday post on Wednesday. Even though YOUR response to my Monday post is NEWER than any of those other 20 new posts from Tuesday, it won’t make it to the top of the page. So let’s say I come back to the site on Thursday, and wade through the new posts to find out if anyone has replied to my Monday post. I see that you have indeed replied to that Monday post on Wednesday, and I want to reply back to you about your comment concerning my Monday post. My reply to your reply will also end up in that “Reply Box” – buried beneath the 20 new posts and all the “Reply Box” comments concerning those 20 new posts.

Get it? My RECENT comment to you on THURSDAY is buried below dozens of posts and replies from TUESDAY.

Okay…. I hope you now see what I’m saying. Now, here’s the thing: Right now, you, Wm, and I are carrying on an ongoing discussion in this thread. And in this thread, the newer comment goes to the bottom of the page – just like it did on the old HN site. There is an ongoing list of posts from you, Wm, and me that are easy to follow, because they are going in a descending order.

So my questions are as follows:

    1. WHY do our posts follow each other in a descending order in this thread, but the layout is way different in the I Was Baptized Into The Trinity thread? Aren’t both of these threads in what is considered “the forum”? If so, why does one take up only the left part of the page, and have the “Reply Box” thing going on, and this one takes the whole page, with the most recent post going below the previously most recent post – in an orderly fashion?

    2. If I start a new thread, which format will it follow? The kind this thread has? Or the kind the “Baptized Into the Trinity” thread has?

    1. Okay. But that’s weird since other BB codes DO work.

    2. I don’t believe you, so I’m going to the new code, but WITHOUT the “ul”. 🙂

    • apples
    • oranges
    • pears
    • tangerines

Dang it! It didn’t work! 🙂

I think I only used bullets two times in all the years I’ve been on HN anyway…… so it’s no big deal. I’m just testing things.

Which makes me wonder why the first part of your quote above (#1) didn’t show. I used the BB code to quote, instead of the “b-quote” button on the tool bar.

    I’ll try again………..

Now it worked, but the quote is all the way to the right of the page. Hmmmmm………….

It will take some time and playing around, I guess. 🙂

Yeah bbcode is just shortcode that produces HTML code.
But lists in bbcode produces list code that is now deprecated code.
These days, all tags that open must have a closing tag.
bbcode list code only has the opening tag
    [*] but not a closing one [/*]

Wordpress rejects code if it is not correct.

But yes, a list without the <ul> tags as you mention should work as it provides indentation, although the result in your post is a bit weird as it jumped outside the white area.

Okay, see if you can follow this………

Oh okay, I see the problem.

Nothing has really changed in this respect.
Before the new forum, the other part of the site worked as it does, albeit a few enhancements. And the forum was separate and you went there by clicking the forum link.

This is still the case. The forum is only that part when you click forum and I have tweaked it to mimic the old forum as much as I can. Latest post last, oldest post first etc. With the exception of the home page in the forum, the forum doesn’t have a right-hand column as it spans the whole page.

The other part of the site consists of blogs and writings that members can comment on. The comment system here is different to the forum as it is more about commenting on the blog or writing above whereas the forum is a full on discussion as it has always been. The comment system is different and follows a format more suitable for commenting than a full on conversation.

The only real change is now you can comment anywhere on the site and make forum posts once you are logged in. Before, the forum was separate and had a separate login. Because of this, the forum was dying a slow death as it was too hard for new members to know that there were 2 platforms. Much easier now. One sign on and the whole site is available.

    🙂

    Hey t8,

Case in point, concerning my long and blathering post………..

I just checked the “Newest Posts” or whatever it’s called on the main forum page. And the latest one listed was Wakeup responding in the “Baptized Into the Trinity” thread.

So you would think that since his was the NEWEST post on the thread, I could read it at the TOP (if ascending order) or the BOTTOM (if descending order) of the page, right? Nope. Turns out that his BRAND NEW post was a reply made to something said on May 9th. So his BRAND NEW post is hidden in the “Reply Box” thingy – smack in the MIDDLE of the thread. It seems there is no method to this madness. I mean, if Wakeup just made the MOST RECENT post on that entire thread, shouldn’t that MOST RECENT post be in a prominent position on the page, and easy to find?

It isn’t. I just had to keep scrolling down through older posts and replies – looking diligently for the word “Wakeup” with today’s date attached to it.

That’s why I want to know if the new topics here will be organized like this thread right here……… or if they’ll be like the “Baptized Trinity” thread.

Now I understand. So if I make a “New Thread”, it will be forum format, and not blog format, right?

    Hey Wm,

I see you found the signature. 🙂 You can use old BB code to make it a different color and size – so it stands out from the rest of your post.

    Forum Snapshot

It works for me. When I click the date of the latest post it takes me directly to the last post.
As you can see, the latest post in Skeptics Area is 3 months old and there are newer posts than that. But it is still the latest post in that topic and forum. I think it randomises what to show here, but chooses the latest from a forum.

If you click on the members name under the dates I circled, then that will take you to the members page as it does elsewhere.

But you say that it takes you to the middle of a topic. I have yet to experience that.

Yup. Just as before. But if you want to blog, I can give you access to that too.

Yeah its me, it was the only picture of me on my computer. It was taken last January by my pastor (from Hawaii) of the crazy Michigander riding his Harley in the middle of winter.

I have a friend who owns a Harley. He hangs with the God Squad.
    I use to own a trail bike. I can’t afford a Harley.

Ah, I think I have figured out your conundrum. It could be either of these explanations.

    1. When I clicked on one of the latest post (date links) it took me to the reply box. But just above it was a small post and the browser had in reality jumped to the post, but because it was small, it naturally showed the reply box underneath. Had the post been big enough, then the browser window would only show the post.
    2. Some latest links take you to the beginning of a topic and not the last post in that topic. This is because the last post in that topic was from the old forum and consequently it lacks the last post marker to jump to. In time this problem will disappear as new posts are made in each forum. I guess once a post is made in each forum, then the latest post will naturally jump to the last post because these posts would have been created in the new forum with the latest post marker.
