I was baptized into the Trinity

Q: How do you get baptized if nearly every denomination baptizes in the name of the Trinity formula?

A: That is a good question. Scripture is clear, that we are to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

Acts 2:37-39
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”

You can be baptized by any Believer that has the Spirit of God and into the name of Jesus. If you cannot find anyone willing to baptize in the name of Jesus Christ and they insist on you being baptized into the Trinity, then your priority is to make sure that you are baptized in the Spirit of God which is the important one and you can do this without the aid of another person.

Scripture records a group who had the Spirit but had not heard of water baptism. Upon hearing they were baptized. So if the the outcome is the Spirit of God and you can receive the Spirit even when not being baptized in water, then you should make sure that you receive the Holy Spirit.

Acts 10:44-48
“While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 And all the circumcised believers who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out upon the Gentiles also. 46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, 47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” 48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days,”

Jesus also said that God will give his spirit to all who ask.

Luke 11:13
If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

So here is my advice:

Trust in the water baptism if you have already been baptized even if it was spoken as in the name of the Trinity. Being baptized in Jesus name does not mean that certain words need to be spoken. It just means in the authority of Jesus Christ and if this what you believed you were being baptized, then you have already made that outward and public commitment to serve God and his Christ. If not, and the understanding was to be baptized into the Trinity and building your faith on the creedal understanding of the group that baptized you, then yes you should seek to be baptized into the name of Jesus Christ.

First thing, you need to make sure you have the spirit of God by asking him for the spirit as Jesus described in Luke 11:13. After that, you will be able to baptize others in water in the name of Jesus Christ. And you could get them to baptize you. Remember this though, Jesus is a transliteration of the name ‘Yeshua’ or similar pronunciation. So as you can see, it is not really the exact correct utterance that is important, but that you do all things in the name of Jesus Christ including your baptism.

Think of it like this. Jesus said, that a cup of water given in his name shall not lose its reward.

Mark 9:41
Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.

Did he mean that we have to say, “In the name of Jesus I give you this glass of water”, or did he mean that you give it because of your faith in God and his Christ. Surely it is the latter, so to do all in his name does not mean you have to utter his name every single time for it to count, rather it is in his authority or because of him.

    Hi PC,

What you quoted shows that baptism s the priority of God- in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Acts 2.41 shows us that SOULS ARE ADDED (3000) by Water Baptism.

Philip baptised the Eunuch and was immediately taken away.

but folks prefer their own opinion and not scripture.

Actually Nick, your words are irrelevant to what I teach because baptism is obedience to God which I support and you have to wonder about a person that doesn’t want to be baptized. That said, from your teachings, you can draw the conclusion that imprisoning a person from a pool of water would stop them from salvation, even if they repented, prayed, and received the Holy Spirit. If they have received the Holy Spirit, then an oppressor could in spite just murder you to deny you heaven. If this foolish notion were true, then enemies of the faith could lock Christians up and give them no access to salvation as you seem to teach it. God’s laws and commandments are tight. You cannot really exploit his plan in such ways.

God is not bound by such things and salvation is not missed because of technicalities.

Imagine hearing, “sorry you cannot enter even though you had the Holy Spirit because you died before water baptism”. I don’t think so Nick.  In some places there are no pools of water, just sand. These places are even in the same Middle East region where the gospel was preached. Further, before Jesus Christ came in the flesh, there was no baptism in water as far as I know. So they all went to hell? lol.

    Listen to John the Baptist.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:”

Finally, if your rebuttal to me is that we are commanded to be baptized in water, then once again, you have completely missed what I am actually saying in which case, it would be better for you to be silent than show your lack of understanding once again.

I can say with confidence that water baptism doesn’t save you. But repentance and obedience, being born of the Spirit, and being led by that same Spirit will.

If you are just water baptized, that may not count toward salvation. It’s not that easy.

    Hi PC,

Repent and be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

These are the words of God spoken through Peter.

    But you find them lacking?

    Hi PC,

Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to him.

    1 Peter 3.21f

    baptism saves you.

but you have a different view?

    Hi PC,

” Look. Here is water. What is to prevent me from being baptised?”

    said the Eunuch.

God will provide the water if needed.

    Still not understanding Nick.

    Water baptism doesn’t save you.

    Salvation is not that easy.

It is said that Emperor Constantine was baptised on his deathbed by bishop Eusebius of Nicomedia in 337 AD. If true, did that save him?

You don’t have to answer me. It is a question for you to ponder.

    Hi PC,

The Sunworshipper Constantine, who murdered his wife and his son and got involved in the decisions of the church, was most likely baptised in the name of a trinity, which was in vogue by then.

that would not have helped him.

    Hi PC,

You say that baptism does not save you but 1 Peter 3 says it does.

And he is talking about baptism in the name of Jesus.

Who do you think I should believe?”

    @nick

Constantine I, died on May 22, 337 AD. Further, the Trinitarian formula had become the standard in many Christian communities by the time of the Nicene Creed in the 4th century. So it is not conclusive as to what name he was baptised or even if he was. We can only go on what history tells us.

Regardless, here are two questions for you that I am almost certain you will not answer, (although you might try hard to prove me wrong about that which would be good).

    1. If Constantine was baptised fully in water on his deathbed and in the name of Jesus, would he have been saved? YES / NO
    2. Since the name Jesus is has its origins in Greek where it comes from the word Iēsous, which comes from the Hebrew Yeshua, does this mean that being baptised in the name of Jesus is also wrong and all who have are not saved? Or to ask this in a different way, are only those who are baptised in the name of Yeshua saved? If not, why, as the scriptures actually do not say ‘Jesus’ which when you think about it, also seems to be a departure.

    1 Peter 3:21-22

and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

    Some things to note:

    1. The water symbolizes baptism
    2. The Holy Spirit is intricately involved in the process of resurrection for believers. The Spirit’s presence within believers is seen as the guarantee and assurance of their future resurrection, as well as the source of the power that brings about this transformation.

So Baptism of the Spirit is baptism. Romans 8:10-11 tells us the following:

“But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.”

John baptised with water, but Jesus Christ baptised with the Holy Spirit and fire. That said, we are commanded to be baptised in water so we can receive the Holy Spirit. However, scripture also points to the fact that some already had the Spirit, but were baptised in water in obedience.

If you think all who are baptised in water in the name of Jesus are saved and only them, then I think you have overreached in your conclusion.

What you need to ask yourself Nick is this. Does water baptism save you or is it but the symbol of something greater taking place?

    Hi PC,

    in reply.

Simon the magician, was baptised in the name of Jesus in Acts 8, but God found his repentance inadequate. It is not an ordinance but a plea to God as 1 Peter 3 told us . Since the decision was made by God I should not prejudge that. Would you?

“Get up. Wash away your sins calling on his name”

There are variations on how scripture describes baptism,” in the name of Jesus , Christ, in the name of the Lord.”

So if God shows us it is not a matter of being pedantic we should accept that.

    Hi Pc,

The  water that is spoken of in 1 Peter 3 symbolising baptism is the floodwaters that destroyed a generation saving only 8 in the time of Noah.

    Hi PC,

We have about 15 baptisms in Acts to learn from and none appear to have been done in the name of a trinity. There are no scriptural witnesses to the baptism in Mt 28 in the name of a trinity.

    Hi PC,

Forgiveness of sins is offered by baptism in the name of the Lord.

Scripture does warn about dying in your sins.

Washing of the feet symbolises the need to constantly seek God’s forgiveness after baptism.

    Jn 13.10

    Jesus said to him

“He who has bathed needs only to was his feet, but is completely clean, and you are clean , but not all of you”

Again in the Our Father, the daily prayer of God’s servants , we are to pray for forgiveness.

Paul rebaptised the 12 who had not been baptised in the name of Jesus/ Yahshua in Acts 19

Peter ordered that those who had received the Spirit first be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ in Acts 10.

    Hi PC,

symbol or not it does not change the requirement for obedience.
