You seem to read the bible like a book that has a simple narritive. You seem to forget these manuscripts were written years after the fact and lines may be years apart.
Its raining cats and dogs outside. We know what that means, anyone reading it 2000 years from now may not understand the symbolism.
I agree with Gene about the language used. A literal interpertation leaves much to be desired.
July 5, 2008 at 3:10 pm#9592497407ParticipantHi Gene
I assume you don't take the scriptures litteraly. What is your
understanding? To take Phillip litteraly, being taken away with the spirit, is to cause God to change the very atoms that exist in a body. It is to assume that the laws of the universe were suspended just to prove a point.
It seems to me to be a figure of speech. When Jesus called indivuduals satan, I dont think a litteral interperation is what he thought.

God is the only entity with “Free Will”. His is all powerful, I am sure you would agree. The only limits he has, he willing sets on himself.
Man has a “will” but it has limits. If we consider a baby is born without any expereince, his mind is like a blank slate. In order for it to learn it must expereince things. It experiences the world as it grows learning about itself and others. It learns about Balck and White and the millions of shades of each. Then it acts within those boundries.
It must act according to those experiences. That is why no two people think alike. All of their learned experiences are different from each other. Individuals are the victim of their experience and learning. “Cause and effect”. Two people can evaluate the same set of circustances and come to totally different conclusions. Why? everybody has been subjected to different sets of experiences. I think that is proven by the differing opinions of this board.
Hope this little explanation helps to clearify “free will”.

I don't beleive in Demons. I am sure in your personal experiences you may have a different opinion.
You obviously have a computer. You may want to Google “The Book of The Beginnings”. I beleive it is written by Massey. It explains where some of these beleifs started. While it may not be completely accurate it at least explains history of Gods and Demons.
Good luck with reading, it takes a lot of concentration.

The inability of Nick to answer questions directly says a lot about Nick.
If you beleive that we are the victims of our own experiences, it is easy to understand.
I would not take his answers personally. It may because he does not trust himself. What he does causes some consternation. It causes individuals to respond in the same manner. Different individuals read the scriptures differently and it does no good to throw scripture at one another. Wars are sometime the result.
It leads to mistrust/fustration. It is the same as all the denominations of today claiming they are right and the only truth.
I am sure GOD smiles at them and their folley. “BE KIND”
IMHO

Google. “Bible Gospel contridictions”.
You will find many.
I cannot explain all of them.
I did not see your answer to unknown interpolations, not only in the gospels but other epistles as well. If you say there are none. How whould we know? Is it possible to put our faith in a word for word interpertation, knowing that possiblely thousands of people have their hands in manuscripts. Is is not possible that some of these people were, as you might say, from the evil one?
July 3, 2008 at 3:24 pm#9571197407ParticipantNick
Does it not seem you that people two/four thousand years ago didn't have the knowledge that we have today. They had no/limited knowledge of mental illiness. In order to assign a language to these events they had to invent something to describe it. Demon possession seems to be to be the result of attempting to describe something not understood, Therefore demons.
Do we not have the ability to challenge some of these illinesses with chemicals today? Is not the same exact problem, demons, cause by chemical imbalances? Our language may/would describe the same event in a completely different manner.
A litteral interpertation of demons may/will cause people to doubt the guiding word of God.
IMHO

Acts 8:39 – The lord took Phillip away? Do you beleive that to be actual and Litteral?
I think your answer to my question missed the mark a little. Both of us know that the Holy Spirit can come to anyone whether or not they have been baptized with water. We have example after example.
I think your interpretation of needing both water and the Holy Spirit is because you beleive if you stray outside of what is written you are lost. You seem to beleive you can choose between litteral, symbolic, and prophetic language and assign it correctly each and every time. Do you think that is possible?
By the way I admire your tenacity. I know your job as a moderator is to keep the conversation moving.
The reason for asking so many questions is to stay away from direct confrontation. I find it much more pallatable.
July 2, 2008 at 7:26 pm#9557897407ParticipantHi Nick!
Is it possible to be baptised in/with water and not receive the Holy Spirit?
If we take all of humanity and dunk them in water will they receive the Holy Spirit.
If your answer is yes, why not.
July 2, 2008 at 3:33 pm#9554797407ParticipantHe Nick
You evidently used your logical mind to think and prepare that answer. Thanks. Logic is important to man.
Gene has a very good question. What if they contridict each other?
We seldom read the gospels horizonally, usually it is vertical. They seem to make sense when read vertically but when compared they are extremely different, especially John.
We know there are several interpolations within the gospels. What of the ones we don't know? Do we need to use our logic?
In your mind are contriditions mistakes?
July 2, 2008 at 12:44 am#9543297407ParticipantNot3in1
Thanks for you answer. I also think it is possible. I also, am a prime example.
Nick
I am going to take you answer as a yes.
We know the Apostles did not write the Gospels but evidently the individuals who did were inconsistant. The lack of continuity of the same events are puzzling.
My logic causes me ask?
What do you think?

Could you please expand on what you see as the bibles “flaws and errors”.

I am new to the board and don't know how to choose an avatar. I will attempt to find out.
I am in the middle of writing a study of the Holy Spirit. The most important thing I have discovered is, it does as it sees fit.
God's Holy Spirit gave life to Adam. Think of That “LIFE”.
The Holy Spirit comes to live in the body of a Christian. When that happens it is unexplainable. When it happens, it is unexplainable even to the individual that receives it.
One minute you are natural, the next you are spiritual. A mystery indeed.
If we had observed the conception/birth of Jesus we probably could not have understood the process utilized just as we don't understand the above. Some things are just not explainable to our minds. The Holy Spirit does as it will.
We are still asking the same questions two thousand years later.
