Why?Stuart
November 9, 2010 at 6:19 am#223729shimmerParticipantBecause Stu, they think that God is like that, they seem to have no problem with it themselves, it reflects who they really are.

Sorry, are you referring to the christians who believe in a monster god, or the ones that deny their god is a monster?Stuart
November 9, 2010 at 7:36 am#223738shimmerParticipantStuart, i'm refering to those who think God is a monster.
November 9, 2010 at 7:38 am#223739LightenupParticipantShimmer,
Obviously you didn't listen to the broadcast to come away with that opinion.November 9, 2010 at 7:41 am#223741shimmerParticipantI did listen ! it spoke about eternal torment in fire, and that those who are saved need to think about hell so they can be gratefull they are not there !
I dont believe in eternal hell, but bod does !November 9, 2010 at 7:43 am#223742StuParticipantSo they're both morons on that audio track?
Stuart
November 9, 2010 at 7:44 am#223743shimmerParticipantYeah Stuart.
November 9, 2010 at 7:48 am#223744StuParticipantSid Roth is a moron because he appears to believe that people can regrow eyes, and the bloke he is interviewing is a moron because he believes in things like hell that he cannot show to exist. I shouldn't think he is on much more than the second level of Kohlberg's six levels of ethical thinking. I bet he could not argue for his god being a moral being, all he appears to be able to do is express his fear of what It might do to him. Most humans escape that mode of thinking about the age of four, but I believe it is well recognised that fundamentalist christians tend to be stunted in the development of their ethical thinking.

November 9, 2010 at 7:49 am#223745LightenupParticipantYou may have listened Shimmer but you missed the whole message and what God's desire actually is.
November 9, 2010 at 8:02 am#223746shimmerParticipantKathi, so…God desires all to come to him, yet will eternally torment those who refuse ? Is that what the message is ? Thats not the God who I know. Thats more like the Muslim God or the one like Stu says.

HA Ha ha ha ha!!!!November 9, 2010 at 10:25 am#223765shimmerParticipantNo, seriously, its not funny Ed. Iv argued this on other forums and with bod, Kathi, I never knew you believed in eternal hell, but as you go to church I thought you may do.
November 9, 2010 at 3:46 pm#223786LightenupParticipantShimmer,
I really don't understand the Bible to say that there will be punishment for the lost for eternity otherwise the lost would have to be given eternal life too just not eternal life in heaven. But I do believe in hell and those who refuse the knowledge and love of Jesus will go there till hell is destroyed. I believe once they are there, they are separated from God and cannot do anything to get themselves out of there. I want to have that strong desire that the men on the radio have to save the lost from this terrible torment. The message that I heard was one of a loving God that desperately wants people to have eternal life with Him. He has His reasons for there being a hell which probably have something to do with people having a free will. I haven't studied hell as much as some of the other things but I don't think that everyone eats from the tree of life and lives forever either in one place of torment or one place of love. I certainly wouldn't lean on my own understanding if I thought there wouldn't be a hell because God is love. There are enough scriptures that speak of suffering in the afterlife and I would much rather live my life telling people about Jesus so that they don't go there as opposed to assuming that hell didn't exist and be wrong.November 9, 2010 at 4:21 pm#223789seekingtruthParticipantEternal Hell – this doctrine as it has done more to dissuade many by impugning the character of God as one who demands unending torment not only of the wicked, but of a grandma who never heard of Jesus. This is inconsistent with the character of God.
Many teach that nearly all the people who have ever lived will suffer in eternal torment in hell. This has been based on a translation of the word aion which has translated as eternal, everlasting, forever this is offered as the proof within the scriptures that punishment goes on forever.
However the translation for aion only means endless when it derives its meaning or endlessness from the nature of the subject to which it is connected. Best translated as “The entirety of time for the object being discussed” Hence when applied to God it is certainly to be considered unending, when applied to smoke rising, until the consumption of the item being burned, and to the torment of the wicked, until all has been paid. God will not torture a non-believer for eternity
But what about the wicked who seem to prosper until death, where is the justice of God. Scriptures support that God will “balance the books” at resurrection. I believe it is God’s way to recompense, it would be unfair for the wicked to have prospered without ever having paid the price I believe it is God’s way to give justice to those who have suffered by exacting a proportional payment from the wicked
As to an argument that if punishment is not eternal then why would life be eternal? This would be valid if aion was the only word that could denote endless duration however scriptures also use other words to describe unending life; such as aphtharsia (incorruptible), athanasian (hath immortality), akataluton (imperishable), aphtharto (immortal)
The fact that there remains debate on the certainty of the proper translation gives reason to at least question it. And while the traditional interpretation is possible, the alternative seems more in line with the character of God
My opinion – Wm
November 9, 2010 at 4:57 pm#223790bodhithartaParticipantQuote but of a grandma who never heard of Jesus. This is inconsistent with the character of God. Why do Christians always preach that going to hell is a result of not accepting Jesus? As you can see you run into the grandma that never heard of Jesus. The fact is hell is based on your behaviour and actions in life and not a pop quiz. As far as whether Hell is eternal or not what is sure is that the punishment of Hell is eternal, whether you are tormented forever or completely anihilated neither is lovely
Islam The Islamic view of hell is called Jahannam (in Arabic: جهنم), which is contrasted to jannah, the garden-like Paradise enjoyed by righteous believers. In the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, there is literal descriptions of the condemned in a fiery Hell. Hell is split into many levels depending on the actions taken in life, where punishment is allotted according to the amount of evil perpetrated. The Qur'an also says that some of those who are damned to hell are not damned forever, but instead reside there for an indefinite period of time. When Judgment Day comes, the formerly damned will be judged as to whether or not they may enter into Paradise. In any case, it is indicated that punishment in Hell is not meant to last eternally, but instead serves as a basis for spiritual rectification.[3]
In the most severe cases of evil there is no escape from hell ever
November 9, 2010 at 5:00 pm#223791bodhithartaParticipantHell (Jahannam) is considered permanent, but subject to the mercy of Allah (swt). It has several descriptive punishment markers such as the Tree of Zaqqum, Boiling water, Hawiyya (The Abyss)…etc.
“Hell has various levels of heat and punishment, each is reserved according to the extent of their disbelief and sins of those being punished. God says:
“Surely, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths (grade) of the Fire.” (Quran 4:145)
The lower the level of Hell, the greater is the intensity of heat. Since the hypocrites will suffer the worst punishment, so will they be in the lowest part of Hell.
God refers to the levels of Hell in the Quran:
“For all will be (ranked) by degrees according to what they did.” (Quran 6:132)
“Is one who seeks the good pleasure of God then like the one who draws on himself the wrath of God? His abode is Hell – and worst, indeed, is that destination! They are in varying grades with God, and God is All-Seer of what they do.” (Quran 3:162-163)”
Please read more about the Islamic view of Hell here:
http://www.islamreligion.com/articles/34…As for levels, Heaven (Jannah) is the eternal abode that contains multiple “levels”. Those who have been chosen by Allah (swt) based on their deeds, to enter His Heaven will be put in the appropriate level. Those in the highest level will be in the company of Prophets and Messengers.Source(s):http://www.islamreligion.com/articles/34…
