Where does Scripture call the Bible the Word of God? It is commonly called the logos, but in John 1:1 Scripture says that the Word (logos) became flesh.
We know that 2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
But I have not seen where Scripture is called the Word of God.
The Old Testament quotes many occasions when the Word of God came to various people with messages, for example 1Ki 12:22 But the Word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying….
1Ch 17:3 And it happened the same night the Word of God came to Nathan, saying…..
And then the Word of God became flesh…. so why do some call the Bible the Word of God?
November 20, 2006 at 5:57 am#32744davidParticipantHere are some scriptures from the Greek scriptures that have the phrase: word of God. Most of them, like the first, for example, definitely don't refer to the Bible.
REVELATION 19:13
“and he is arrayed with an outer garment sprinkled with blood, and the name he is called is The Word of God.”But I think some of these seem to indicate that it's speaking of the scriptures. Also, in the Hebrew scriptures, 50 times we find the phrase the word of God, or saying: This is what Jehovah said, or similar expressions. It's clear that the Bible is inspired of God and is God's word.
1 THESSALONIANS 2:13
“Indeed, that is why we also thank God incessantly, because when YOU received God’s word, which YOU heard from us, YOU accepted it, not as the word of men, but, just as it truthfully is, as the word of God, which is also at work in YOU believers.”HEBREWS 4:12
“For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and [their] marrow, and [is] able to discern thoughts and intentions of [the] heart.”MATTHEW 15:6
“he must not honor his father at all.’ And so YOU have made the word of God invalid because of YOUR tradition.”MARK 7:13
“and thus YOU make the word of God invalid by YOUR tradition which YOU handed down. And many things similar to this YOU do.””LUKE 5:1
“On an occasion when the crowd was pressing close upon him and listening to the word of God, he was standing beside the lake of Gen·nes′a·ret.”JOHN 10:35
“If he called ‘gods’ those against whom the word of God came, and yet the Scripture cannot be nullified,”ACTS 4:31
“And when they had made supplication, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were one and all filled with the holy spirit and were speaking the word of God with boldness.”ACTS 6:2
“So the twelve called the multitude of the disciples to them and said: “It is not pleasing for us to leave the word of God to distribute [food] to tables.”ACTS 6:7
“Consequently the word of God went on growing, and the number of the disciples kept multiplying in Jerusalem very much; and a great crowd of priests began to be obedient to the faith.”ACTS 8:14
“When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Sa·mar′i·a had accepted the word of God, they dispatched Peter and John to them;”ACTS 11:1
“Now the apostles and the brothers that were in Ju·de′a heard that people of the nations had also received the word of God.”ACTS 13:5
“And when they got to be in Sal′a·mis they began publishing the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. They had John also as an attendant.”ACTS 13:7
“and he was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. Calling Bar′na·bas and Saul to him, this man earnestly sought to hear the word of God.”ACTS 13:46
“And so, talking with boldness, Paul and Bar′na·bas said: “It was necessary for the word of God to be spoken first to YOU. Since YOU are thrusting it away from YOU and do not judge yourselves worthy of everlasting life, look! we turn to the nations.”ACTS 17:13
“But when the Jews from Thes·sa·lo·ni′ca learned that the word of God was published also in Be·roe′a by Paul, they came there also to incite and agitate the masses.”ACTS 18:11
“So he stayed set there a year and six months, teaching among them the word of God.”2 TIMOTHY 2:9
“in connection with which I am suffering evil to the point of [prison] bonds as an evildoer. Nevertheless, the word of God is not bound.”COLOSSIANS 1:25

“However, it is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all who [spring] from Israel are really “Israel.””1 CORINTHIANS 14:36
“What? Was it from YOU that the word of God came forth, or was it only as far as YOU that it reached?”2 CORINTHIANS 2:17
“[We are;] for we are not peddlers of the word of God as many men are, but as out of sincerity, yes, as sent from God, under God’s view, in company with Christ, we are speaking.”PHILIPPIANS 1:14

It shows clearly that this passage is talking about the Word (Jesus)(RV) And for this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when ye received from us the word of the message, even the word of God, ye accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe.HEBREWS 4:12

November 20, 2006 at 6:05 pm#32773CubesParticipantHi Oxy,
Thus saith YHWH:
Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper [in the thing] whereto I sent it.
We also must take into account that, if Jesus is to be considered as the Word of God in the sense that you mean, then God is the speaker and his word/message/Jesus is preaching to us what God is saying (Eph 2:19), therefore, the word conveys God's intent for us. Since Jesus has a separate will, this indicates that he is the messenger in accordance with Deut 18:15, John 3:16, Malachi 3:1 (Messenger of the Covenant). The messenger brings a message from the sender to us: The message of the kingdom of God and Jesus, whom God has sent to be the savior of the world. This still does not make the Messenger, God, but rather the Son and servant of God.

Hi Oxy,
Is this fair or relevant?
Is it fair that some are saved and some are not? Is it fair that no-one can see the Kingdom of God if they are not born again?God is the judge and we know full well that there is a major difference between having a studied knowledge of the Bible and a knowledge that comes through knowing Him, with the Holy Spirit giving enlightenment and revelation.
I am not intending to show david any disrespect, but there is a need to lay the cards on the table don't you think?

The Bible and Jesus etc refer to Scripture as Scripture. It is also referred to as the words of God, and often as “it is written”The Word of God however is the name/title given to He who was in the beginning.

Hi Cubes, consider this.. Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light. And there was light. And we know that nothing was created that was not created by the Word of God.
Joh 1:3 All things came into being through Him (the Word), and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.
So God spoke and the Word went forth to create.
Consider Isa 55:11 this way.
Isa 55:11 so shall My Word (Jesus) be, which goes out of My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall certainly do what I sent it to do.
The Word of God was sent to our world as described in the previous verse.. Isa 55:10 For as the rain comes down, and the snow from the heavens, and does not return there, but waters the earth, and makes it bring out and bud, and give seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
It is Jesus who has not returned to the Father void!
November 20, 2006 at 8:52 pm#32781davidParticipantQuote In none of the Scriptures above does it say that Scripture is the Word of God. –Oxy
This is what I began by saying:
Quote Here are some scriptures from the Greek scriptures that have the phrase: word of God. Most of them, like the first, for example, definitely don't refer to the Bible. Nowhere does scripture specifically say that “the Bible is the word of God.”
But, it does say that “all scripture is inspired of God,” or God breathed (2 tim 3:16.
2 PETER 1:21
“For prophecy was at no time brought by man’s will, but men spoke from God as they were borne along by holy spirit.”Since the words and idea written in scripture is from God, and inspired of God and contains the message of God, it can fittingly be called the Word of God.
A Word is something that conveys a thought or message. Jesus was of course Jehovah's primary messenger, being sent to the earth to provide a message, along with providing a ransom sacrifice.Men spoke from God.
EZEKIEL 2:2
“And spirit began to come into me as soon as he spoke to me, and it finally made me stand up upon my feet that I might hear the One speaking to me.”LUKE 1:70
“just as he, through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, has spoken”They were borne along by holy spirit.
2 SAMUEL 23:2
“The spirit of Jehovah it was that spoke by me, And his word was upon my tongue.”ACTS 1:16
““Men, brothers, it was necessary for the scripture to be fulfilled, which the holy spirit spoke beforehand by David’s mouth about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus,”ACTS 28:25
“So, because they were at disagreement with one another, they began to depart, while Paul made this one comment: “The holy spirit aptly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to YOUR forefathers,”I wonder what you think of scriptures such as:
JOHN 17:17
“Sanctify them by means of the truth; your word is truth.”
(Was Jesus speaking of himself?)JOHN 8:31-32
“And so Jesus went on to say to the Jews that had believed him: “If YOU remain in my word, YOU are really my disciples, and YOU will know the truth, and the truth will set YOU free.””I think sometimes perhaps words are just words and not Jesus:
REVELATION 21:5
“And the One seated on the throne said: “Look! I am making all things new.” Also, he says: “Write, because these words are faithful and true.””In making known his purposes, God “spoke on many occasions and in many ways” over a long period of time. (Heb. 1:1)
In the Bible we often read expressions such as: “The spirit of Jehovah it was that spoke by me, and his word was upon my tongue” or, “This is what the Sovereign Lord, Jehovah of armies, has said.” (2 Samuel 23:2; Isaiah 22:15)
Is the Bible God's word or mans?
Maybe a lot of those scriptures can't be taken to mean that it's referring to the Bible. I agree with that. But even if “the word of God” was never found in the Bible, the bible can still be fittingly called God's word.
It is not man's word. God used men, as a person might use many secretaries to write down his thoughts. When the document is finished, it's not the secretaries who take credit for it. It's the author, who inspired and had them write the Book. It can truly be called the word of God.But I do see what you are saying about the scriptures that contain the phrase “word of God.”
The Bible is the written expression of a communicating God, the Word of God, and this is acknowledged in phrases such as “expression of Jehovah’s mouth” (De 8:3), “sayings of Jehovah” (Jos 24:27), “commandments of Jehovah” (Ezr 7:11), “law of Jehovah,” “reminder of Jehovah,” “orders from Jehovah” (Ps 19:7, 8), “word of Jehovah” (Isa 38:4), ‘utterance of Jehovah’ (Mt 4:4), “Jehovah’s word” (1Th 4:15). Repeatedly these writings are spoken of as “sacred pronouncements of God.”—Ro 3:2; Ac 7:38; Heb 5:12; 1Pe 4:11.
DEUTERONOMY 8:3
“So he humbled you and let you go hungry and fed you with the manna, which neither you had known nor your fathers had known; in order to make you know that not by bread alone does man live but by every expression of Jehovah’s mouth does man live.”JOSHUA 24:27
“And Joshua went on to say to all the people: “Look! This stone is what will serve as a witness against us, because it has itself heard all the sayings of Jehovah that he has spoken with us, and it must serve as a witness against YOU, that YOU may not deny YOUR God.””EZRA 7:11
“And this is a copy of the letter that King Ar·ta·xerx′es gave Ez′ra the priest the copyist, a copyist of the words of the commandments of Jehovah and of his regulations toward Israel:”PSALM 19:7-8
“The law of Jehovah is perfect, bringing back the soul. The reminder of Jehovah is trustworthy, making the inexperienced one wise. The orders from Jehovah are upright, causing the heart to rejoice; The commandment of Jehovah is clean, making the eyes shine.”ISAIAH 38:4
“And the word of Jehovah now occurred to Isaiah, saying:”MATTHEW 4:4
“But in reply he said: “It is written, ‘Man must live, not on bread alone, but on every utterance coming forth through Jehovah’s mouth.’””1 THESSALONIANS 4:15
“For this is what we tell YOU by Jehovah’s word, that we the living who survive to the presence of the Lord shall in no way precede those who have fallen asleep [in death];”ROMANS 3:2
“A great deal in every way. First of all, because they were entrusted with the sacred pronouncements of God.”ACTS 7:38
“This is he that came to be among the congregation in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Si′nai and with our forefathers, and he received living sacred pronouncements to give YOU.”HEBREWS 5:12
“For, indeed, although YOU ought to be teachers in view of the time, YOU again need someone to teach YOU from the beginning the elementary things of the sacred pronouncements of God; and YOU have become such as need milk, not solid food.”1 PETER 4:11
“If anyone speaks, [let him speak] as it were [the] sacred pronouncements of God; if anyone ministers, [let him minister] as dependent on the strength that God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. The glory and the might are his forever and ever. Amen.”So while some or most of those references that people usually look at may not be referring to the Bible, they could just as easily be, based on the fact that the Bible is the expression of Jehovah, inspired of Jehovah, Jehovah's pronouncements, his sayings, his commands, his laws, his orders, his utterances.

Am I going to be tolerant? I thought this site was about truth and tradition. Here's one of the greatest traditions that the church has, and it wrong. It's a greater issue than the trinity! Can I stand seeing the title/name given to Jesus from the very beginning being misused? I know it's a popular thing to call the Bible the Word of God, but Scripture doesn't support it! Should we ignore this false teaching which has robbed the church of its true power and understanding for so long? Yeah, why not. It's only a heresy!

March 28, 2007 at 11:52 am#46467TimothyVIParticipantHi Oxy,
I don't know if you still hang around here or not.
I find this question interesting.
I am being led to believe that the bible is not the word of God, but instead
a book of stories within which are many of the words of God.
Scriptures are inspired by God. But how do we know which are the inspired
words of God? Who decided that the entire bible was considered scriptures.
Jesus only quoted a few of the old testament scriptures.
Those definitely are inspired. Jesus quoted from the prophets, so they were definitely inspired.
But were all of the 600 laws of Moses truly inspired? Jesus apparently did not think so.The prophet Isaiah did not think so. He said this in spite of the sacrificial laws of Moses.
Isa 1:11 “What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?” Says the LORD. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle; And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats.
Isa 1:12 “When you come to appear before Me, Who requires of you this trampling of My courts?
Isa 1:13 “Bring your worthless offerings no longer, Incense is an abomination to Me. New moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies– I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly.
Isa 1:14 “I hate your new moon {festivals} and your appointed feasts, They have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing {them.}The prophet Jerehiah did not think so. He even hinted that perhaps the scribes lied.
Jer 8:8 “How can you say, 'We are wise, And the law of the LORD is with us'? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes Has made {it} into a lie.Perhaps I am trying too hard to find an excuse for the depiction of God as a maniacal, murdering god of genocide
in the old testament. Who knows? If perhaps the entire bible is not the inspired word of God, then some of it
could have just been written by a superstitious tribe of Hebrews to prove that their God loved only them.I know already that I am going to hear, ” well, which parts of the bible do you proplse that we take out”.
I am not proposing anything. I am merely continuing this thread if anyone has something to offer.Tim
