This is what is known as wishful translation on the part of Trinitarians. As Kyle points out, the Zechariah passage, (as quoted by Is 1:18), reads awkwardly, and makes little literal sense. However, the Revised Standard Version translates the same passage this way:“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication, so that, when they look on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a first-born.”
Clearly, this version reads more cogently, and makes more grammatical sense. In fact, the quotation of this verse in John 19:37 confirms that the author of John translated the Zechariah passage in this same way!
“And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on him whom they pierced, (John 19:37).”
This passage is not about YHWH being literally pierced. It is about a third party, who is closely associated with YHWH, being pierced. Many popular Trinitarian translations attempt to confuse this fact, but it remains true nevertheless.

I don't see how it's grammatically impossible for it to refer to YHWH as the one being pierced. That seems to me to be the most plain understanding of this scripture. It does seem a bit odd that the one speaking would say “me” and then “him”, but take John 17:3 for instance: “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
Christ speaks of himself in the third person here – at least in most of today's english translations. You obviously can't use logic in this case to prove that the one speaking isn't Jesus Christ.

Thanks for this post WhatIsTrue.I found this verse also awkward as it didn't make perfect sense grammatically speaking from any point of view including the Trinity view.
But I safely concluded that if ME and HIM are translated correctly, then it must be talking about 2 different identities. Fortunately I also said that there is the possibility of a fault in the translation. So my view was based solely upon the premise that the translation was faithful while admitting that this may not be the case.
It could be that the Revised Standard Version did a better job than the others in translating this verse. If that version is correct, then it is certainly clear in that it poses no contradiction and the grammar is sound.

The OT is replete with passages that read awkwardly WIT. But the Hebrew-English translators primary job is to preserve the integrity of the texts, whether they read awkwardly or not. You should know that. It's “wishful” thinking to just make sweeping statements without any facts to substantiate them in the belief that the statements will sound authoritative anyway.WIT, the overwhelming majority of English translations render Zech 12:10 more or less the same way as the version I quoted (NASB). I checked BibleGateway and it yielded 15 versions with the word “me”:

9;s more likely that in John 19:37 John used a targum. He made a slight alteration of the Hebrew text in his Gospel to facilitate his personal understanding of the Zechariah passage. It's quite common practice for NT writers to do this, as you probably already know WIT. The NT is full of imperfectly translated, even paraphrased quotations OT scriptures. I think that John recognised that the “me” in the Zech 12:10 was Yeshua and his targum reflected this.Quote This passage is not about YHWH being literally pierced. in this passage, but for the wrong reason.Please read Zec 12:9-10 as I have written it below. I only added one comma but it totally changes the
way the verse reads. As you know, there were no punctuation marks in the original Hebrew, so the translators added them where
they thought they should be.And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. Zec 12:9
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me, ( so far it is obviously God who is talking about himself, but now it changes and God is talking about Jesus.) whom they have pierced they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for [his] only [son], and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for [his] firstborn.
It may help you to see what I mean if you read the word “whom” as the one, or the person.

Hi Is 1.18,
If you had not built on the trinity theory would you be searching for such unusual verses and trying to show the Son of God could be called by the Father's holy name?Given that it does not in any way actually teach a trinity idea of three in one, and only by splicing in a non existant similar verse about the Spirit of God could you even achieve a patchwork derivation, what is the point?

t8 hasn't conceded. He thinks that (if the translation is correct) that there is a ME and HIM. ME appears to be Yahweh, HIM appears to be Christ given that supposition.I do not say that they are both the same person given the grammatical structure in English. It seems obvious to me that anyone with a reasonable grasp of English would agree that ME and HIM are 2 different people/identities.
I am also open to the English translation being wrong or inadequate (as is possible) and I do have my suspicion due to the grammatical inaccuracies that appear to be present. If I wrote that verse in school I think that I would be marked down because of the grammar.
But as it stands anyone who has a reasonable grasp of English grammar would struggle to see ME and HIM as the same person, and if I had to choose which one was Christ, it seems obvious that it is HIM.
I also think that what WhatIsTrue says is very reasonable too. i.e., that John translates it a certain way so therefore we have a guide as to what Zechariah was saying. That is if we believe that what John wrote was correct.
John makes it clear that it was Christ who was pierced and what Christian would disagree with that anyway?
