Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) have now measured the distance to the most distant galaxy so far, UDFy-38135539 (the faint object shown in the excerpt on the left). It is seen here in a Hubble Space Telescope photo and is about 13.1 billion light-years away. Credit: NASA, ESA, G.

This is a stunning picture. It's going to be even more amazing when the square kilometre array radio telescope is built (hopefully across NZ / Oz). We will be able to collect information from the formation of the first stars which is a different process to how stars form today.

The VLT is the first in a series of really silly names for very cool toys.

Check out the EELT and the OWL:

I just read that the “pillars of creation” were destroyed 6000 years before we even discovered them. It's a weird thought to think that this is the case.

Yes it is weird that our moment in time goes into the past the further we look.
Albert had a point when he said that time was not constant and was relative to each person.
The weirdest thing to me is that time slows down when you start to move.
And weirder still is that the universe appears to have a boundary at quantum level.
i.e., there comes a point when you can no longer divide time or length, time/space.

Actually even weirder is the fact that the act of observing quantum particles ultimately determines whether the photon will behave as a particle or wave.

Some suggest that this is because consciousness contains the universe and the universe is molded from conscience, a sort of holographic projection of conscience.

Even Einstein said time is an illusion, and we know that what we see with our eyes is merely a picture created in the brain as a representation of what is outside of us.

Did you know that gravity also affects the movement of time (but not as much as movement)

    Perhaps, the weirdest experiment ever.

    hi

may be this is why we only read in Geneses that it was an EVENING AND A MORNING first day ………..to the six

this is also why it says 14 generation to ….and 14 generation to ……….

    a thought

Thanks for that. I didn't know that.

I was surprised by that as well. Everyone seems to know that moving quickly slows time, but few seem to know that gravity affects time as well (although much much less.)

If you want to age slower, you should spend time around overweight people. It's a scientific fact. πŸ˜‰
