    Hi,
The term sword occurs frequently in scriptural terms.

It can be a natural aspect of the carnal nature of men.

    Ps 57
” 4My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. “

It can be an aspect of the enemies of God such as the seductive whore of Babylon.
    Prov 5
” 1My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:

2That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

3For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

4But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

5Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.”

It is the nature of Christ who is the Word.
    Rev 19
“13And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

14And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

15And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

16And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

It is one of the parts of our armour.
    Eph 6.17
” 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”

But we do not wield that sword in attack but allow that sword to use us .

I believe we use the sword.
    The sword is the word.

Just as Jesus resisted Satan with the word. We can used the word to fight against principalities.

11(U)Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the (V)schemes of the devil.

12For our (W)struggle is not against (X)flesh and blood, but (Y)against the rulers, against the powers, against the (Z)world forces of this (AA)darkness, against the (AB)spiritual forces of wickedness in (AC)the heavenly places.

    Hi Mercy,
I was thinking more of allowing that sword to do the work without our added futile efforts, rather like the sense of the work of the Spirit shown in Lk 21

“12But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

13And it shall turn to you for a testimony.

14Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:

15For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.”

Of all the spiritual armour in the full armour of God the sword of the Word is the only offensive weapon – the rest are all defensive.
As Jesus showed us when resisting the Devil in the wilderness – man shall not live by bread alone but every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God – he defeated him with the power of the Word.

    Hi Malcolm,
Did he attack Satan or defend his situation, just showing him using the sword that he was deceived?

    Hi Mercy,
A swordsman has an advantage if his sword is twoedged in that he can slash one way and then the other, backhand and forehand so I don't think it relates to offense or defence.

Your right Nick. was just an allegory.

I do think the word is offensive and defensive though. The word drove out demons.

    Hi Mercy,
    True.
They are the minions of the opposition and Jesus brushed them away like flies, but we are urged caution in dealing with angelic majesties.[2Peter and Jude]

    Hi Malcolm,
For clarification when Satan tested Jesus in the desert using the Word of God, then it was Satan who was doing the attacking.

Jesus used the Scriptures as a defensive sword to repel the attack and showed Satan he had incorrectly applied that Word.

The sword will come from the Holy Spirit in time of need.

Luk 12:11 And when they bring you before the synagogues, and the rulers, and the authorities, be not anxious how or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
Luk 12:12 for the Holy Spirit shall teach you in that very hour what ye ought to say.

It is the Spirit that will bring the scriptures to mind.

Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.

True the sword can be used to defend oneself, but it is able to attack as well.
Whereas a helmet, shoes, breastplate or shield are not conventional weapons,
Rather part of a soldiers defensive armor.

    MATTHEW 8:16
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils:
and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

    MATTHEW 10:1
And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits,
to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Jesus not only defended himself from the false attacks of the Devil – he also drove him off with the Word.

    MATTHEW 4:10-11
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written,
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

    Question:
Why are we, God's children, Not casting out demons, healing the sick, and performing other miracles as Jesus said?

Because of a lack of true repentance. God is not mocked. We can give lip service all we want (see Matt 7:21-23), but God is not fooled. The disciples forsook all to follow Jesus. What about us? Have we forsaken all or have we compromised, and used the Word of God falsely to defend our posiitons? God says He will be found of us if we seek Him with our whole heart.( Jer 29:13) Just a thought.

    Hi kenrch,
The works of God are only done in accordance with the leading of the Spirit. How many lepers were in Israel when Naaman the Syrian was healed?

There will be many claiming salvation because of works done in the name of Jesus who will be rejected because they are not known by him.

Having said that God can use us if we are established and equipped by Him and we should be open to the situations that He gives us to do such work.

    Hi,
Oxy believes that the “Word of God” always means Jesus in the bible.

    Eph 6

” 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”

    This cannot relate here surely?

    Rev 19
“15And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. “

Here Jesus is seen with that sword in his mouth??

    Hi ,
The warriors of God use the sword against those lofty towers of speculation.

    Romans 1:21
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

    2 Corinthians 10:5
We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

    1 Timothy 1:4
nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.

    2 Timothy 2:23
But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels.

Man must not get caught up in speculations becuse they are beyond what can be known from revelation. It is far more dangerous to then build doctrines on the sand of that speculation and then search scripture for scriptural justifications for those beliefs.

    Hi,
We should continue to learn from every word of scripture as it never loses it's power .
It is dangerous to set up camp to defend a gnostic derivation such as trinity as it stops us learning .
