I agree that it is a problem when they lean on their understanding and not open to testing it. This is a good forum to share thoughts so others can challenge them and sharpen them.
Great things can come from speculation. Frank Peretti told me once, “Never lose your sense of wonder.”
LU
The key is the nature of the tests. If two cannot agree on guidelines for testing it just falls into more speculation and opinion bashing.
the problem lies with those that are not really interested in supporting God's work with any more then lip service. Proving a doctrine becomes a pride trip. Perhaps part of the problem is that there is too much variance in what Christians believe is the work of God in this day. Maybe a thread on the plan and purposes of God needs to be started and when a consensus is found test doctrine to see if they support that purpose.February 2, 2009 at 7:48 pm#120035NickHassanParticipantHi martian,

How do you know what the scripture really means? Rely on yur own logic? Do you use context, language definitions, paraleel scriptures and most important do you judge them by their fruits and what they actually do?_OR-
Do we go by voices we hear, hairs on the back of our necks, whatever fits with our (already decided upon ) doctrineWithout appropriate safeguards there is no way to prove anyting. Certainly no way to prove anything to anyone else.

I am not sure I catch your point. The context of this verse is Christ giving instructions to the disciples befoe sending them out. It is a time of great pesecution. People were being killed, tortured and put in prison for teaching as Jesus did. Unless you live in Iran or some other anti-Christian country, it cannot apply in the same way.February 3, 2009 at 4:43 pm#120143LightenupParticipantQuote (martian @ Feb. 03 2009,09:22) Quote (Lightenup @ Feb. 03 2009,11:09) Hello,

Well Martian,
Maybe you have never heard a whisper in your ear that came out of nowhere that changed your life and gave you a connection for something you had been searching for spiritually. I proclaimed it to some trinitarians, yes a form of persecution all in the name of God is what I experienced. Try telling trinitarians that the Son of God may have had a beginning. I was told that I was deceived, I had pride, I had a spirit of blindness, I had the spirit of a cult. Nobody seemed to come up with the same diagnosis. I do not hold that against anyone because I believe that they meant well although I felt very alone.I heard a whisper in my ear that day that brought my search to my destination and I am thankful for it eventhough I haven't felt like I “fit in” with my trinitarian brothers and sisters since. Believe me, I like to fit in, but not at the sake of denying what I have come to believe.
So do with it what you will, I am sure that it is not my job to convince anyone however it is my job to test it and then proclaim it. It has brought me greater understanding of other scriptures and greater knowledge of my Lord and Savior.

February 3, 2009 at 5:43 pm#120150CindyParticipantKathi good post. I do agree with your understand and that shows that God by His Holy Spirit is working in them that will have an open mind, and listen. Understand what Covenant we are under is very important, otherwise we go back to the legalistic old Covenant. Christ has died for us and we are under the Blood of Christ, and sin is not imputed to us. And if we should sin, and we do, we have a Mediator Jesus Christ, to go now to the Throne of God and ask for forgiveness and He will instantly do so. The
law is magnified and God is putting all into our Hearts. But what is most important is that Eternal life is a free gift from God, so no one can boast. If we love God with all of our Hearts, He is pleased with us. He does not want a robot, He wants Children that love Him, respect, honor and do all good things for Him. So our Job here is to grow and become more like Christ.Peace and Love Irene

Well indeed I have had many experiances of God telling me things. I have always tried to test them by using good sound principles of Bible interpretation. Without those sound principles we can never be sure if our testing is honest or accurate.February 3, 2009 at 8:33 pm#120167martianParticipantQuote (Lightenup @ Feb. 04 2009,03:43) Quote (martian @ Feb. 03 2009,09:22) Quote (Lightenup @ Feb. 03 2009,11:09) Hello,

If you are interested, I have made a brief outline of some of the major principles I use in interpreting scripture on this page.https://heavennet.net/cgi-bin….1;st=50

Hi Mandy,
I'll bet that was neat to be around Frank Peretti and hear his stories. I enjoyed listening to him at a pro-life women's service's banquet once. I still remember something that he said beside not losing your sense of wonder. He said that some believe that there is no absolute truth…true or false? I got a kick out of that!Nice to hear from you. Take care,

I like this one for absolute truth.
There is a God an I am not him.I cannot argue with that one.
