    Psalm 82 (NIV)

    1 God presides in the great assembly;
    he gives judgment among the “gods”:
    2 “How long will you [a] defend the unjust
    and show partiality to the wicked?
    Selah
    3 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;
    maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.
    4 Rescue the weak and needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
    5 “They know nothing, they understand nothing.
    They walk about in darkness;
    all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
    6 “I said, 'You are “gods”;
    you are all sons of the Most High.'
    7 But you will die like mere men;
    you will fall like every other ruler.”
    8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
    for all the nations are your inheritance.

    To whom exactly is this chapter referring to? Prophets? Judges? The Pharisees?

    From what I understand, in:
    verse 1, it says God will bring judgement to the 'gods'
    verse 2, God says the 'gods' defend the unjust
    verse 3 + 4, I'm uncertain, is God commenting on what they SHOULD be doing?
    verse 5, God says that the gods lack wisdom
    verse 6, these 'gods' are called “sons of the Most High” … Christ is a son of the Most High, is God being sarcastic?
    verse 7, these 'gods' are mortal
    verse 8, Earth will be judged

    When accused of being blasphemous, Christ said that the pharisees are referred to as being gods (according to this scripture). How can they truly be sons of the Most High, gods, partaking in the divine nature, if they have no wisdom, defend the unjust, and reject the messiah? Others thoughts please!

    Hi Jbl,
    I believe v 1 refers to the sons of God as in Ps 89 where God judges
    ” Ps 89v   5The (J)heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD;
            Your faithfulness also (K)in the assembly of the (L)holy ones.
       6For (M)who in the skies is comparable to the LORD?
            Who among the (N)sons of the mighty is like the LORD,
       7A God (O)greatly feared in the council of the (P)holy ones,
            And (Q)awesome above all those who are around Him?”

    I believe v6 refers to judges on earth as Jesus has told us, who do the work of God dispensing His justice.
    Compare Is 1.
    “(F)Listen, O heavens, and hear, O (G)earth;
            For the LORD speaks,
            “(H)Sons I have reared and brought up,
            But they have (I)revolted against Me.
       3″An ox knows its owner,
            And a donkey its master's manger,
            But Israel (J)does not know,
            My people (K)do not understand.”
       4Alas, sinful nation,
            People weighed down with iniquity,
            (L)Offspring of evildoers,
            Sons who (M)act corruptly!
            They have (N)abandoned the LORD,
            They have (O)despised the Holy One of Israel,
            They have turned away from Him…..

    10Hear (Y)the word of the LORD,
            You rulers of (Z)Sodom;
            Give ear to the instruction of our God,
            You people of Gomorrah.
       11″(AA)What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?”
            Says the LORD.
            “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
            And the fat of fed cattle;
            And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats.
       12″When you come (AB)to appear before Me,
            Who requires of you this trampling of My courts?
       13″Bring your worthless offerings no longer,
            (AC)Incense is an abomination to Me
            (AD)New moon and sabbath, the (AE)calling of assemblies–
            I cannot (AF)endure iniquity and the solemn assembly.
       14″I hate your new moon festivals and your (AG)appointed feasts,
            They have become a burden to Me;
            I am (AH)weary of bearing them.
       15″So when you (AI)spread out your hands in prayer,
            (AJ)I will hide My eyes from you;
            Yes, even though you (AK)multiply prayers,
            I will not listen
            (AL)Your hands are covered with blood.
       16″(AM)Wash yourselves, (AN)make yourselves clean;
            (AO)Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight
            (AP)Cease to do evil,
       17Learn to do good;
            (AQ)Seek justice,
            Reprove the ruthless,
            (AR)Defend the orphan,
            Plead for the widow………
    .

       21How the faithful city has become a (AY)harlot,
            She who was full of justice!
            Righteousness once lodged in her,
            But now murderers.
       22Your silver has become dross,
            Your drink diluted with water.
       23Your (AZ)rulers are rebels
            And companions of thieves;
            Everyone (BA)loves a bribe
            And chases after rewards
            They (BB)do not defend the orphan,
            Nor does the widow's plea come before them.
       24Therefore the Lord GOD of hosts,
            The (BC)Mighty One of Israel, declares,
            “Ah, I will be relieved of My adversaries
            And (BD)avenge Myself on My foes.
       25″I will also turn My hand against you,
            And will (BE)smelt away your dross as with lye
            And will remove all your alloy.
       26″Then I will restore your (BF)judges as at the first,
            And your counselors as at the beginning;
            After that you will be called the (BG)city of righteousness,
            A faithful city.”

    jbl,

    According to the testimony of Jesus in Jn. 10:35, they were called “gods” unto to whom the word of God came. This passage does not only pertain to the “heavenly assembly”. It refers to the “assembly” here also. His will is to be done on earth as in heaven. There is no problem with His judgment in the heavenly court, the problem is His judgment in the earthly realm due to His representatives not judging properly.

    This principle (although “gods” is not mentioned) is also seen in Matt. 18:15-20 where Jesus deals with discipline. Also in Acts 15 when the leaders assembled to discuss the question of the necessity of circumcision. We also find this principle in 1 Cor. 5,6 where there was a professing brother fornicating with his own father's wife and the situation was not being handled properly.

    A proper understanding of the dialogue between Jesus and His audience in John 10 will help us understand who Jesus is and the point He was conveying.

    Hi typsrn
    Jn 10.35
    “34Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in (A)your (B)Law, 'ÂI SAID, YOU ARE GODS'?

    35″If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

    36do you say of Him, whom the Father (D)sanctified and (E)sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, '(F)I am the Son of God'? “

    Surely Jesus here is pointing our that those judges being referred to
    [to whom the Word came]
    were called “gods” by God, and this caused them no offense,
    but now he who is greater yet has been sanctified and sent by God,
    calls himself not a “god” but “the Son of God' and yet they take offense?

    Nick,

    What is your point? I know that Psalms 82 refers to the judges.

    Hi,
    Ps 58 is similar
    ” 1Do you indeed speak righteousness, O gods?
    Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men? “

    Hi,
    I guess God was saying that men who have known the wisdom of God because of their calling cannot assume any advantage with God because of that fact. It should be a guide to them that there is an awesome God to be feared who shares His grace with men and they should act on that information themselves to make sure they are put right with Him.

    Luke 8:18
    “So take care how you listen; for whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him.”

    Lk 12
    “From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.”

    Hi,
    All who have positions of authority on earth have an anointing from our God.
    We are told to pray for all who have such authority[1tim 2.2]
    But that anointing is not unto eternal life
