What “cleansing effect on the environment”?
There are some plausible mechanisms for how the charges actually separate in a cloud, but I don't think it is a settled matter. It is not quite electrons jumping, the very high voltage ionises the air downwards, and the path of ions conducts the main discharge, the part we see, upwards from the earth.
What amuses me on this topic is the number of churches that have lightning rods.
OK, I can be easily amused sometimes…

I do not judge in this respect. There are others who have seen this comment and have judge otherwise – nothing to do with JustAskin being a Moderator – I have no 'higher standing' because I am mod – it's not what you think!
Mod is mainly for deleting posts and cleaning the forum. I don't have powers to “award” blocks – I can “Intervene” in threads – even Debates but with righteous reason only without being told to “butt out”.
Did Stu himself complain – that's the crucial point: Point of order “A Crime is only a crime if it is reported to be a crime”
check this; “The rate of Domestic abuse is about 90% Male against female” – why? “because Males rarely (10%) report abuse by Females against Males”. A female reports an abuse, often as an addition to the hurt, and sometimes even when it is they that initiated the incident – the male is “arrested” even as he protests 'I was only defending myself” (This is not to take away from REAL Male on Female abuse)POK, I'm really sorry if I came across harshly about the Lightening thing. It just struck me like a flash that maybe others aren't as aware as maybe myself and (ha – maybe Stu) are about these sort of things.

To the extent that ions (of either polarity) cause aggregation of particulate matter in the air, they could therefore plausibly be of some benefit to the respiratory system. Are you suggesting though that lightning would have a significant effect on particulate levels in the air? Surely in the open atmosphere there would not be time for precipitation of the particles before discharge and release.Ozone is toxic to microorganisms, but also to humans, and lightning also produces nitrogen oxides which, while they are a means of fixing nitrogen for use by plants, are nevertheless also toxic.
You would have to conclude that lightning has as much of a toxifying effect as it does a cleansing one.

So glad you can take simple words into science Stuart, does comfort one now and again. Thank you, by what I understand I would agree with you.Although, what is upsetting to me, is that all the monies they spend on research, and to no avail. Bothersome is it not.
