    To Mary

    Luke 1:34 – 36.

    To Zachariah

    1:13 – 15

John was filled with the Holy ghost from his womb.  However Gabriel, answering marys question told her “the Holy ghost shall come upon her and the power of the most high will overshadow you.”  He never said that about John. many I know say jesus was not filled with the spirit from birth.  ok and John was, as John said “he who follows me I am not worthy to wear his shoes”. So what does the POWER of the most high and to overshadow mean. it must mean more than just being filled form the womb?

    Hi davidh,

The promise was to Mary and not her Son

John was filled in the womb but Jesus not till the age of 30..

    Hi davidl,

    Both men were conceived.

In both cases the natural was before the spiritual.

Neither John nor Jesus were preexistent godly beings.

    DavidH,

However Gabriel, answering marys question told her “the Holy ghost shall come upon her and the power of the most high will overshadow you.”

That is also what happened in the time of creation as the Spirit hovered over the waters.

    Hi KW,

    Not quite.

    But the Spirit creates.

    Nick,

The Spirit was over the waters and so would have cast is shadow on the earth if it had a shadow and there was light. That is what it means in English.

    Hi KW,

    Intellectual speculation?

    Nick,

It is just the literal meaning of English words.

In English it also has the implications that the Spirit is more powerful than Mary. That implication may have reassured Joseph that Mary was innocent of any wrong doing and it was literally an act of God.

That is the translators take which may not be correct as I have not looked as the original language or the viewpoint of other translators.

    Hi KW,

Do you start with your ideas and then try to prove them?

    It is one approach.

    Nick,

    Ideas are too be tested.

In this case the angels words appear to reassure Joseph that his intended is not guilty as the Spirit of God, which is more powerful than her, has created a child within her by the power of God. He did this by alluding to the creation of ages. If that is correct then the angels words were well chosen and full of compassion just as I expect them to be.

    Hi KW,

    Guilty??

    Joseph would need no reassurance.

But he would need confirmation that Mary was yet a virgin.

    Nick,

Call it what you want as in this case it is the same thing.

Joseph believed she was guilty of having sex with another man and the angel assured him that was not the case.

    Hi KW,

Where does scripture say what Joseph believed?

    Hi Nick,

I’m surprised you missed this one…

“Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example,
was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel
of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take
unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” (Matt 1:19-20)

    Hi Ed and KW,

So you ASSUME the reason was that HE THOUGHT Mary MUST HAVE BEEN unfaithful?

Best to stick to what is written.

    Hi Nick,

Why do you suppose Joseph said this if Kerwin’s analysis is flawed?

    Hi Nick,

You mean like ‘stick to what is written’ where it says that the serpent was in the garden pryer to Adam?

Where exactly is that written again?

    Hi ED,

To reach the conclusion you have you have to GUESS the thoughts of Joseph.

    Stick to what is written.

Hey I don’t mind being wrong. I am here to learn.
