That's strickly a matter of opinion, Nick. I've met and known many, many people who find the Book of Mormon to be every bit as beautiful and plain to read as the Bible. And I'm certain there are many more in the world that would agree with you, saying they found nothing but confusion there. I personally don't see what's so eratic and cofusing about the book, but that doesn't mean I believe in it one bit. There are many, many works of fiction that are absolutely beautiful written by men. And on the other side, there are many works of fact that are very confusing and hard to read. Neither case says anything about their validity.

    Hi kyle,
The bible was written by the Spirit of God through men. The Spirit does not speak new things of His own initiative but takes us back to the teachings of the bible, which does not include the added book of mormon. Why not discard it as being as useless as any other solely human work?

I think the reason a lot of people choose to believe in it is that they see no reason why something like it can't exist. They would say that it makes total sense for God to deal with different people at different times in history. Some would argue that the Bible never explicitly states that God will reveal his word at different times through different men.

I think most people believe in the Book of Mormon for one main reason. You'll always hear that they've prayed strongly and sincerly about it, and that they feel they've recieved an answer confirming its validity. If you talk to someone about it, they'll most likely refer you to a couple scriptures in the last part of the book. A promise is given by the author that those who pray with a sincere heart will have the truth of the book manifest unto them from God. Personal revelation basically. I've heard all kinds of testaments from both sides – those who believe they recieved a confirming answer, and those that didn't. It all seems to depend on the individual, just as it does with the Bible.

    Hi kyle,
So you are not free and deep in your heart you believe this book is equal in validity to the bible?

Is there a way to edit or delete posts? I noticed a typo in the last sentence of the first paragraph of my last post. Here's the correct sentence:

“Some would argue that the Bible never explicitly states that God will never reveal his word at different times through different men.”

    Hi kyle,
    Jn 16
” 13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. “

There is no new revelation beyond the scriptures

I never said that. I've been trying to affirm the opposite so people wouldn't jump all over my case about things I don't believe. I started to study and build my faith from scratch sometime last year. In doing so I became free to consider all angles and points of view with an open mind. Thus far I've really only began to establish what the Bible says about the nature of God and Christ, and also how we can truly gain knowledge of things like this. Beyond that I haven't made very many decisions.

But I was raised in the LDS church. You guys seemed have questions about what they believe, so I thought I could be of some help describing their point of view. That's all I'm posting for right now. I wanted to make it clear that me explaining what they believe from their view point was not an invitation to argure the validity of that view point. It's not mine, so why should I have to defend it?

Just curious how many hours would you spend out in service, the missionaries…what does their day consist of? I saw on wickipedia that their day begins really early, like 6:30. I know they only do this for two years, but I'm wondering how intense those years are.

It's pretty dang intense. Every part of their day is scheduled in some form or another. I think 6:30 wake up to 10:30 in bed is pretty typical. Each day starts off with two or three hours of scripture study – half personal and half with their companion. Other parts of the day are broken up between getting ready, eating, working out, knocking on doors, meetings, and discussions with people they find who are interested. This for six days a week the entire two years. One day a week is for preperation. Laundry, shopping, writing letters, recreation, etc. I don't think those days are usually as scheduled.

Those who go come back very changed. They're personality doesn't change. They just always seem to be better, more disiplined versions of themselves. Kind of like what service in the military seems to do to people. In all honesty, I think you would have to have a lot of passion and drive to go do it. But I've never heard anyone who's wanted to go come back saying they regretted it. Their faith seems stronger than ever, and they always say it was the best experience of their lives.

    Hi kyle,
Does “scripture study” include study of the book of mormon?

It sure does. If you're a member of the chruch then you believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. Even if you don't, they do. So they would call it scripture and study it right along side bible. Even cross-referencing between the two books. It's definitely understandable why so many would find this hard to accept, regardless of whether the book is true or not. A book such as this would require quite a bit of proof in my mind. I'm sure you would agree.

My question is moreso how much time do yu think they spend preaching the good news, not so much about their personal study, etc.

Would you say that the book of Mormon and the Bible are in agreement? Do they teach the same things?

    Hi kyle,
Since it not known to be scripture and divides the church of God would it not be best put aside so you can see outside of the LDS church understanding?

The time actually preaching the gospel varies from day to day. It all depends on how many doors don't get slammed, and how many discussions with non-members they have planned for the day. But I can assure you that they're preaching as much and in as many ways as they can. That is, afterall, the purpose of being there.

A member of the church would definitely tell you that the Bible and the Book of Mormon are in agreement. The whole point of the book is to provide a second witness of the same thing – namely Jesus Christ and our Father in heaven. In a murder case it would make complete sense to have more than one witness to testify of the same thing. Any supposed conflict between the two books would need to be resolved in the eyes of a member. Just as is the case between any two verses in the Bible. The word of God needs to be in perfect harmony if it's true.

I have put it aside, Nick. For months I've focused all of my attention on the Bible and some very foundational topics contained within. I don't have any plans to pick up the Book of Mormon and study it the same way any time in the near future. I'll get to it when the time is right, and I'll test it just like any other religious doctrine. Don't worry. For now it's securly to the side.

    Hi kyle,
You must decide whether or not the LDS church is the body of Christ on earth or not.
It has no relationship with any other group that calls itself Christian.
It has teachings that are new and abhorred by all others.
So it is either the only correct group or totally deceived.
Same as the JWs in this regard

Some people who come here love to argue over things as trivial as genealogies or ontology and so I encourage you to beware of these people. They will not ultimately help you, but will try and force you into endless debates because they like the sound of their own voice.

    t8,
There is a reason these debates seem drawn out for you. You just refuse to answer the tough questions. Discussions are only productive when there is a degree of openmindedness on both sides as well as a genuine commitment to provide honest answers to probing questions.

Why would any monotheist be afraid to answer this question?!?

    Hi Is 1:18

    you asked this question?
Okay, just so I understand you correctly….you hold that there is only one uncreated God.

    Is-this-true?

yes he is wrought with many over his Name's sake

Eze 20:44 And ye shall know that I [am] the LORD, when I have wrought with you for *my name's sake*, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

I [am] the LORD, saith the Lord GOD

Eze 36:23 And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I [am] the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

The covenant of the father rufused has even caused confusion of the true creator?

Mal 2:10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

    Jer 33:20 Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
Jer 33:21 [Then] may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.

If christ is on Gods throne as God the covenent is broken and David has not a son to reign on his throne

Jer 33:21 [Then] may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.

The Angel reveals the Christs throne to mary
Luk 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

touching writen invitation from his father King David to preform all his desires and sit on the throne preform justice
Mar 12:36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Christ has been given authority to raise the dead and judgment from the throne that his father said sit though down and build it to all generations; God has rested from his works?
Psa 89:4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.

Many refuse to allow God to rest on the seventh Day and for Christ to be the author of the new creation
The mystery of God and the father and the Son and who said what?
    Col 2:2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

Jhn 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

    God bless

Holy crap, Nick. I keep saying over and over that I really don't want people jumping all over my case about things I don't even believe in in the first place. All I wanted to do was provide you guys with an inside look of the LDS view point. I know because I grew up around these people, and know more or less how they think and act. I can't help that I was raised in the church, and ultimately it doesn't define me. I'm a big boy. I make my own decisions.

Let me be absolutely direct. You need to stop telling me all your reasons why the church I grew up in is wrong. I know of way more convincing reasons than you've thrown at me. I keep saying that that church isn't me. I'm not here to defend it, just to answer anyone's questions as to what they believe. It's like you don't understand what I'm saying or something. If you don't stop this instant I'll be forced to never post again. This is just rediculous, and I refuse to put up with it.
