Hi david,
Of course you will not receive what you are so skeptical about.
But you do need the power of God to be effective in His service.March 11, 2007 at 5:17 am#44424davidParticipantQuote “How is it we are hearing, each one of us, his own language in which we were born? . . . we hear them speaking in our tongues about the magnificent things of God.” (Acts 2:8-11) We are told they
“started to speak with different tongues” (Acts 2:1-4)Nick, which other languages can you speak that enables you to spread the good news to new ones of different tongues? The truth is, today, the Bible is available in I think 90 % of the languages in the world, and we have people who can speak essentially all the languages to share the good news. So the gift of tongues for the purpose of speaking in different tongues or languages to communicate the good news isn't necessary as it was when Christianity was in it's infancy.
Nick, I know you've spoken about speaking in tongues. Please don't tell me it was just unitelligable gibberish that you thought was somehow related to what the early Christians did.
Nick's silence to the answers to these questions would seem to indicate to most that he speeks in unitelligable speech and doesn't speak in “different tongues.” Anyone listening to Nick would not “hear [him] speaking in our tongues” or “language.”
They would hear gibberish.
And possibly an outpouring of uncontrolled emotion, to go along with it.
Speaking in tongues had a purpose with the early Christians.
Wickipedia:
“In 2006, at the University of Pennsylvania, researchers, under the direction of Andrew Newberg, MD, completed the world’s first brain-scan study of a group of Pentecostal Practitioners while they were speaking in tongues. One of the study's authors is a practicioner of glossolalia and a born-again Christian herself. The study concluded that while participants were exercising glossolalia, activity in the language centers of the brain actually decreased, while activity in the emotional centers of the brain increased.”
That seems to go with what is visible. An outpouring of unrestrained emotion, accompanied by an utter lack of language, but instead, sounds that have no meaning.
For the early Christians, this gift was much the opposite.Quote Of course you will not receive what you are so skeptical about.
Nick, in view of this scripture and the fact that what you and others do in no way resembles what the early Christains did, in purpose or practice, I wisely follow this advice:
“My dear friends, do not believe all who claim to have the Spirit, but test them to find out if the spirit they have comes from God.”—1 John 4:1, Today’s English Version.March 11, 2007 at 8:28 am#44474NickHassanParticipantHi david,
God is a God of power and we are warned about those who would deny his power.
If someone asked you to lay hands on someone and pray for healing when you were door knocking what would you do?
Explain that God cannot do that sort of thing anymore?March 26, 2007 at 6:43 pm#46222NickHassanParticipantHi,
Matt 7
22″Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?”Faith and knowledge is enough for miracles but not for salvation.
Obedience is demanded.
It is not that we have known of Christ but that he knows us
and our name is written in the book of the living.Matt 7

December 15, 2007 at 10:39 pm#74953OxyParticipantA few weeks ago I had a student in my classroom who was bent over in pain. This woman asked me if she could be excused from class as she was in such pain that she just wanted to go home. I asked her if I could pray for her. She said yes and then walked out the door. I went to my office and prayed for her.
The next day when the woman returned she described the events as “freaky”. She was not a believer, but she told me that by the time she got to her car she was completely healed. Praise God, He still does perform miracles!
December 15, 2007 at 10:47 pm#74956OxyParticipantWhen I was saved in 1978 I had come out of some pretty heavy occult practices as well as drugs. I was wonderously set free at that point and God gave to me a sound mind. He also opened the Scriptures up to me so that when I read them I literally consumed them.
A few weeks later I had a desire for fellowship and wanted to find a church. I was led to the Assembly of God in Hamilton New Zealand at that time. The experience I had there was freaky. People were prophesying and speaking in tongues. Others interpreted and layed hands on the sick and prayed for them. Words of knowledge were being spoken and to me the whole thing looked all too similar to what I had come out of, ie a spiritual experience. I determined in my heart that I was going to use the very Scriptures that they prophesed to live by to prove them wrong.
As I read Scripture the Lord pointed out to me “Look, speaking in tongues” and then “Look, prophesying and laying on of hands”. I learned then that God is very active amongst His people in very much the same lines as He was in the New Testament. I thoroughly enjoy my relationship with my miracle working Father!

Certainly the merciful healing works of God are given freely because He is a God of Love, and to help the faith of men. If more obeyed and layed on hands and asked God to heal the sick we would see more of this work and the strident cries of the mockers and disbelievers would become more faint and replaced by awe.December 17, 2007 at 10:20 pm#75149942767ParticipantQuote (942767 @ Dec. 16 2007,08:59) Hi saw the following program relative to Delores Winder and I thought it might interest you. http://www.sidroth.org/site….rl=1121

We certainly do serve an awesome God Nick. Unfortunately there are none so blind as those who will not see. I was witnessing to a gay man the other day and I knew that the Holy Spirit was convicting him, but he chose to ignore God's grace and go with evolution, so there he is, trapped in his depravity.December 18, 2007 at 12:30 am#75165NickHassanParticipantHi oxy,

All the miracles in the world do not actually prove we are faithful servants of God.
That faithfulness is shown in our attitude to his anointed and sacred teachings.
If we abide in his teachings we fellowship with the Father and the Son.December 18, 2007 at 2:47 am#75220NickHassanParticipantps

I am very familiar with that verse thanks Nick. It was one of the first things God taught me as a new Christian when I was awed by a guy I heard prophesy.I think the verse below is more relevant.
Mat 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord! Lord! shall enter the kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in Heaven.
How do we know the will of the Father? He tells us. It's called faith.

That is your interpretation of the Scriptures Nick. To do the will of the Father involves a relationship. If you are totally focused on Scripture to the extent that the relationship suffers, then you are no better off than those who were under the law.

Men can easily be deceived by spiritual events. We are only weak humans and angelic and demonic powers can lead us off the path of truth. So only by abiding in the scriptures can we be certain of our leadings.1Jn4

That's why Jesus said “My sheep shall know My voice”.Unfortunately it's not common for those who have not received the Holy Spirit to hear His voice.
