    Hi Stu,
It is native to the sons of God.

Do all the Jews that Christians killed believe this statement?

    Hi Stu,
Does selfishness push you up the scale as you gain personal as well as social advantage?
Loving your neighbour is rather differently expressed by Jesus.

    Lk10
33But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

36Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

37And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

    Hi Nick

The movement to higher stages in Kohlberg's scheme is away from selfishness towards unversal ethical principles. Put from a possible christian viewpoint, reasoning on the subject of kindness might look like this:

Stage 1: We had better be kind because Jesus / god wants that, and his judgement on us might be more negative if we don’t show kindness.

Stage 2: I want people to be kind to me so I better be kind to them. I had better speak kindly about god because I want him to judge me well in turn.

Stage 3: I will show kindness because that is what a righteous person should be seen to be doing.

Stage 4: We accept the word of god / the actions of Jesus as a code to live by and that code includes a requirement to show kindness.

Stage 5: If we all agree to follow the code in scripture that requires us to show kindness then we will all benefit, as long as everyone is prepared to play their part. There are circumstances in which being kind might go against a verse here or there but overall kindness is the greater good.

Stage 6: Regardless of what god wants or what we all agree to or what is written in scripture, it is just the right thing to do to show kindness.

Which of these do you identify with most closely?

    Stuart
