Hi,
Yes it must be purged.
Hebrews 9:14
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?April 10, 2008 at 9:22 pm#86715NickHassanParticipantHi,

Some do show evidence of the original receipt of a right conscience.Rom2
14For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:15Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
But hoping that we are among them is a vain hope for most.

Why?
The worse we know we are the more open we become to redemption.October 17, 2008 at 5:45 pm#110595NickHassanParticipantHi Tim4,
You asked in another thread.
“What did man gain from eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, if no one seemed to know the difference until after God gave us the law?”Conscience.
But without grace to fulfil it became ineffective.
Now light has come and it is alive again by the Law of the Spirit.Romans 2:15
Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)2 Corinthians 1:12
For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.1 Timothy 1:19

Graceless man was crippled with conscience in Eden and found serving the god of this world.
Law was given to support weakened conscience but only revealed our state.
Grace and peace came finally through Jesus Christ. Now renewed men can do all things through him who strengthens us.

Men are dragged down by guilt.
All are aware that their behaviours and thought have not always been righteous.Salvation purges our conscience and sets us free-we can regard what was of the past as rubbish.

Rom 2March 27, 2014 at 5:15 am#375104davidParticipantIs conscience just beliefs that are programmed into us in youth?
A canibal doesn't feel bad when he eats human flesh.
In fact he feels odd and bad when he doesn't.This wasn't born into the cannibal. It's just the beliefs and behaviours that he was surrounded with growing up.
When a person behaves in a way that contradicts his beliefs he suffers from cognitive dissonance. This state of mental stress results from the dissonance or disharmony between the behaviour and the cognition.
March 27, 2014 at 5:19 am#375106NickHassanParticipantHi david,
Rom 2
12 For all who have sinned [f]without the Law will also perish [g]without the Law, and all who have sinned [h]under the Law will be judged by the Law; 13 for it is not the hearers [j]of the Law who are [k]just before God, but the doers [l]of the Law will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles who do not have [m]the Law do [n]instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having [o]the Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.March 27, 2014 at 5:55 am#375114kerwinParticipantDavid,
Psychiatrists practice a soft science and it tends to be influenced more by the bias of the individual. Never the less they are better at determining the situation with those that live by the flesh and not those that live by the Spirit. The later are just too alien to them.

Conscience seems to be that twinge of mental discomfort that one feels when their behaviour contradicts with their beliefs.Ie: a person says:
I believe cannibalism is good.
I am currently unable to practice cannibalism.
Therefore I don't feel right or good. One could say my conscience is bothering me.
My conscience (the beliefs about right and wrong) seem to have been mostly programmed into me as a child. While my parents programmed me to enjoy cannibalism, yours taught you the opposite.
I truly feel off or bad or not right, or like I'm not doing what I'm supposed to when I don't practice cannibalism. You may feel the exact opposite.
Given this, what exactly is conscience? Is everyone BORN with a conscience? If so why do the cannibals at no point feel bad about eating humans?
Or is belief programmed or modelled into children?

David,Yes, as you were using their terms and arguments. We have to be careful when we do that as what they claim is unsteady ground and shifts often.
