Which Ten Commandments?
Protestant=P
Catholic=C
Hebrew=H1P. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
1C. I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not have strange gods before me.
1H. I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
2P. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
2C. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
2H. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any manner of likeness, of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; Thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; And showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them that love Me and keep My commandments.
3P. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
3C. Remember thou keep the Sabbath Day.
3H. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.
4P. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
4C. Honor thy Father and thy Mother.
4H. Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work. But the seventh day is the sabbath in honour of the Lord thy God; on it thou shalt not do any work, neither thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
5P. Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
5C. Thou shalt not kill.
5H. Honour thy father and thy mother; in order that thy days may be prolonged upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
6P. Thou shalt not kill.
6C. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
6H. Thou shalt not kill.
7P. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
7C. Thou shalt not steal.
7H. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8P. Thou shalt not steal.
8C. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
8H. Thou shalt not steal.
9P. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
9C. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife.
9H. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10P. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.
10C. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's goods.
10H. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
God time is His seventh day sabbath and His laws are His commandments. Our right hand symbolizes work and our forehead is what we think. We are judged by what we think and do and that is the Seal of God that we are Marked by.
May 28, 2004 at 3:51 am#3415itsmeParticipantI did some thinking on this matter and i coppied the same thing using three different columns and in a simplified manner. It came to me the the Protestant and the Hebrew are very much the same thing. Though the first commandment in Hebrew says something in a different way, it says “I am the Lord thy God…” i would think that it means the He IS THE Lord, and there is not other. I mean, after putting it all in columns next to each other, those two jumped out to me that they were (maybe worded a little different) basically the same. I would also think maybe the Hebrew would be more accurate being that it was the original language the old testament was written in (wasnt it?)…

The catholic bible had to leave out God's second commandment about graven images. If you took out the statues and paintings and crucfixes from their churches there wouldn't be much left.
That is a deliberate taking away from the Word of God and good evidence that she serves herself ,not God, and God has no part in her works or those of her rebellious children.October 8, 2004 at 11:22 pm#3417shakai7ParticipantHello,
Are we still required to keep the ten commandments, or have we been set free from that responsibility?October 8, 2004 at 11:31 pm#3418Is 1:18Participant1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with,[1] that we should no longer be slaves to sin– 7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. (Romans 6)October 8, 2004 at 11:39 pm#3419NickHassanParticipantHi shakai.
Until the commandments were given all were under conscience and the conscience always remains as a means to salvationn for those who never hear the gospel. The ten commandments were given to the Jews and remained in force till the time of John the Baptist. They also remain as a guide to good behavior and if you wish to become as a jew and obey them perfectly they remain a door to salvation.
The gospel of Jesus Christ surpasses all previous covenants. It requires obedience to God's demand to be born again into Jesus of water [for forgiveness]and the Holy Spirit[for understanding and power].The Holy Spirit will lead you to obey the commandments anyway.
October 8, 2004 at 11:42 pm#3420Is 1:18ParticipantI neglected to add this bit…
15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey–whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
19I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. 20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[2] Christ Jesus our Lord. November 15, 2004 at 2:29 am#4512NickHassanParticipantHi,
Mt 9.17″ Nor do men put new wine into old wineskins :otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out, and the wineskins are ruined : but they put new wine into fresh wineskins and both are preserved.”
Lk 5 39″ And no one after drinking old wine wishes for new: for he says 'the old is enough'”
Eph 4. 23″ ..and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind..”
Rom 12.2″ ..But be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is , that which is good, and acceptable, and perfect”So if the new wine is the Holy Spirit, like the wind blowing where it will, then we must be are able to let go of our old legalistic concepts of God, and be prepared to be reeducated from within, confirming that learning from the Word. If not we risk being damaged in our faith and losing the wonderful new blessing. Many prefer to try the old way of the law rather than risking letting the Spirit control their lives.
But Jesus said the wise man can take what is old and what is new out of his storehouse. Without the NT and the inspiration of the Spirit we will never understand fully even the OT.
November 18, 2004 at 9:05 pm#4556NickHassanParticipantHi,
The 10 commandments are part of the Law.
Rom 3.23″ for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
Rom 2.11″ For there is no partiality with God.
For all who have we sinned without the Law will perish without the Law;and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law”
Rom 3.19″ Now we know that whatever the Law says , it speaks to those who are under the Law, that every mouth may be closed , and all the world may be accountable to God;because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight;for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
But now, apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe;for there is no distinction”The law is for the jews, the NT fulfills and surpasses the law as it saves.
November 28, 2004 at 11:52 pm#4664NickHassanParticipantHi,
The new commandment brought by Jesus was “to love one another as I have loved you”Jn 13.34and also 14.21 and 15.10-12.
It is expounded in detail in the book of 1 John esp 2.3-8
It also says in 2.6f
” If we say we have fellowship with him but continue to walk in darkness we are liars and do not act in truth. But if we walk in light as he is in the light we have fellowship with one another and the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin “
So to walk in light we must walk with one another. The eye cannot function without the arm or leg, and none can function without the head, Jesus. For the blood to cleanse us the body must come together in mutual respect and dependance. The life is in the blood. Without the blood the part of the body we are is dead. As Hebrews 10 says we should not absent ourselves from the assembly.
But it seems there are so few who have obeyed and live in the body and divided denominations have no part of the body? What do you think?November 29, 2004 at 12:04 am#4665AnonymousGuesthey nick… can you expand on this?
November 29, 2004 at 12:14 am#4666NickHassanParticipantWhich bit nate? See what you can get out of those scriptures and we can discuss it eh?
November 29, 2004 at 12:44 am#4667AnonymousGuesthey nick,
i guess the main things i get from those verses are that we show our love for god through the love of our brethren… that fellowship with jesus is intrinsically tied to fellowship with his followers… that to walk in the light and have fellowship with the brethren is more pleasing to god than sacrifice…
another supporting verse, i guess, would be “when two or three are gathered in my name, there am i in the midst of them”… or compare with “how good and how pleasing it is when brethren dwell together in unity…” my reading of this psalm is that it equates the fellowship of believers with the anointing of the priesthood… so i would infer that the most pleasing thing to god is when we live in one accord by the new commandment (“love one another as christ loved us” which you mentioned earlier)…
i think, at least in many churches, this principle has become too institutionalised to be practical… not that this needs to be so, but i think that when people assemble together out of tradition, ritual or religious obligation, they're probably less likely to show a desire for fellowship (or love, or unity)… btw. i don't equate “agreement” with “fellowship” – it's easy to agree, and it doesn't require love… actually, i think when people don't agree they're better able to display love – because i see love as being regardless of doctrine, etc, whereas (paraphrasing jesus) if we love only those who agree with us, how does that set us apart – even those who don't know god do that…
what do you think?
cheers,
nate.
November 29, 2004 at 12:58 am#4668NickHassanParticipantYes I would agree. But how can we show love to our brothers unless we fellowship with them? So what you get is that if we remain in sin we will avoid fellowship anyway as it woulkd expose our true nature. Fair enough.
2.11″ But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness..”
The Spirit of love in us should overflow to all anyway but Jesus insisted on a special love between the brothers.
When I read the verses about the blood the word “cleanses ” spoke to me as I would have thought “cleansed “would fit better with salvation doctrine so there is some ongoing event described here.November 30, 2004 at 2:49 am#4683NickHassanParticipantHi nate,
It is interesting that Jesus showed that the OT law could be summarised as two laws of love. That was God's intention all along.
Yet to read the ten commandments is to see restrictions on behavior at first reading. Again if you go into the detail of all the laws and restrictions in the OT it does show the extent of vile behaviours that must have been going on and had to be outlawed. It must have been frustrating for a God of love to be seen instead as a lawmaker as I am sure that was never His intention but man's bad behaviours demanded He do so.You can also see why He completely changed tack, as goodness for most became only obedience to rules. So having exposed all sin he sent His Spirit in His Son to give to all who want it the internal motivating force for good and reunite men with Him as at the beginning.
do you agree?
November 30, 2004 at 5:03 am#4687AnonymousGuesthey nick,
yeh, i see what you're getting at… also, it can be seen through jesus' statements about the law of moses, for instance:
“moses allowed this [a letter of divorce] because of the hardness of your heart, but from the beginning it wasn't so…”
…and all the “you've heard it said(s)” from matt 6 or 7??
because they were trying to fulfill the law from an obligation (or fear?) motivation, certain things were too difficult for them… but jesus was talking about a motivation of love…
also, i think if we live by the law of love, our shortcomings are covered by grace, as we've talked about before – love covers a multitude of sins… whereas under the law of moses, our shortcomings are only attoned through sacrifice…
i think this ties in, interestingly with “i desire mercy over sacrifice”…
what do you think?
cheers,
nate.

September 13, 2005 at 4:05 am#8636NickHassanParticipantMore on Law
September 13, 2005 at 5:32 am#8644EliyahParticipantYea, more on Law, go read the Article of “” Did Paul do away with the Law??””.
You can't fulfill those 2 laws of Messiah if you don't obey all the law through the Spirit of Messiah.
Those who teach that the laws of Yah are not for Gentiles are OF THEIR FATHER THE DEVIL( John 8:44) and are called CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL( 1 John 3:8).
