Uruk, the first city and birth of civilization
Uruk is known by archeologists as the world’s first city and the birth place of civilization. Outside of archeology, we read in Genesis 10:10, that Erech (Uruk) is described as one of the first cities established by Nimrod in Shinar. The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. In the earlier passages, Nimrod was introduced, and is renown as a formidable champion and skilled hunter. He was also the founder of a succession of realms. Commencing in the region recognized as Shinar, Nimrod established his dominion, including Babel (or Babylon), Erech, Accad, and Calneh. Conventionally, Nimrod is perceived as an early autocrat, wielding significant authority. As the subsequent verse will disclose, various sections of Nimrod’s empire will ultimately emerge as formidable adversaries of Israel, among them being the realms of Assyria and Nineveh. The lesson here is that Noah may have been a great man of God, but his offspring had to make their own decisions regarding God and not all found favor with him. Obviously, some even became enemies of God. The bible tells us that Nimrod is the great great grandson of Noah: Noah Ham Cush Nimrod So what was this city of Nimrod like? Well thanks to archeology and the deciphering of cuneiform writing, we know many things about Uruk. The following video described it as the first city and the birth of civilization.
